I’ve just completed a series of 16 paintings shown here,
with the primary focus being the almost
100 year old elevated No. 7 subway line
that runs through the borough of Queens in New York City.
The play of light and shadow that the “El” (short for Elevated) casts on the
streets, buildings and people under it is absolutely fascinating to me.

BUS UNDER THE EL
This watercolor was painted on heavy weight Arches 300 pound archival watercolor paper.
The size is 30 inches x 22 inches.
The location is Roosevelt Avenue in the borough of Queens in New York City. The avenue and it's surrounding areas are home to one of the most diverse ethnic communities in New York City. Roosevelt Avenue is the main thoroughfare running through most of Queens. Small businesses and houses, both apartment buildings and single owner homes, line both sides of the elevated subway structure (the "El" as it’s called by New Yorkers). And it’s this “El” that dominates the landscape of the avenue.
The shadows cast on the street by the subway structure are constantly moving as the light changes from morning to evening. And it's this constant play of shadow and light that intrigues me the most and it’s why I paint this subject over and over again.
